One summer I had an amazing, whirlwind trip to Tanzania (for TEDGlobal), Uganda (for gorilla trekking - post here) and finally Dubai (post here). To start the trip I had a 12 hour layover in London.
Despite the jet-lag and exhaustion I decided to spend a few hours exploring the city. Given the upcoming trip, I didn’t want to push myself too much. However, I was still able to enjoy a small part of what London has to offer.
After a red-eye flight from the U.S., I landed in London around 6:20 AM. I was luckily able to fly through customs and was at the airport tube stop by 7:15 AM. It was super easy and relatively cheap to take the tube into the city. I took the Piccadilly line to Green Park and was there by 8 AM. I first walked by Buckingham Palace. From there I headed to Westminster Abbey and Big Ben before grabbing a quick breakfast. I then sat in a park nearby to read and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine (luckily!). At 11 I headed back to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guards. However, it was an off day so I didn’t get to see them.
Around 12:15 I met my friend who moved to London for lunch at an amazing Indian restaurant, Tamarind. After lunch I decided to head back to the airport for my evening flight to Tanzania.
